Evans, Colorado is a small town in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. Evans is located on U.S. Highway 24 and east of Pueblo. It is bordered by the towns of La Junta to the north and Garden City to the south. The first settler in Evans was John Evans who came from Virginia in 1849. He built a cabin on his farmstead around 1853. A post office called Evans was established in 1858, and remained in operation until 1860. In 1865, Colonel Augustus Cope organized a wagon train led by David Hinkley that journeyed from Pueblo to Fort Grant in Arizona Territory for the purpose of striking gold prospects there. They stopped at Evans on their way back to Pueblo; John Witherspoon was one of the drivers for this trip. John Witherspoon started a grocery store here in 1892 which became known as "the White House". The store closed circa 1968 but has been preserved as a museum since then . The current building replaced an earlier structure dating back to 1886 which housed a school and Methodist church before being razed for development purposes in 1984-1985
