Evans, Colorado is a small town located in the Rocky Mountains of western Colorado. The population was 2,746 at the 2010 census. Evans was founded in 1868 by Levi Evans and his wife Anna Gates. It became a city in 1915 and has remained that way since then. The Evans family were among the first to settle in the area now known as Evansville,Colorado. Levi's father, Elijah Blythe Evans had come from England in 1847 and homesteaded near present-day Evansville on November 25th, 1868. He named his new community after himself and his late wife Anna Gates (née Clemens). At first the settlers did not have any children so they raised cattle and hogs until 1880 when Levi found two daughters born to an Indian parent – one who married him and took their name, Anna; the other married John Aikenour of Fort Collins, Colorado (later Mayor of Denver) and adopted her daughter's name back. In 1915 when Evans became a City it still bore the name of its founder with one change: Anna Gates had died childless years earlier so her husband John Aikenour became "Levi Aikenour" upon her death in 1958.
