Evans is named for General George Washington Evans, an American military leader andCo-founder of the University of Evansville. The first Europeans to visit present day Evans were two French fur traders, Pierre Radisson and Jacques Cartier, on their way to find new land to trade with the Native Americans. They traveled down the Arkansas River and found what they thought was a great valley filled with trees of gold but when they got closer they realized that this could only be an Iowan (Kansas) falsetto voice telling them about another Valley of Gold where there were no trees! They continued their journey back upriver until they reached Fort Bridger on the Missouri River. The area that now includes Evans had been visited by Paleo-Indian people for thousands of years before European arrivals began exploring it in large numbers beginning around 10,000 BC. Archaeologists have discovered evidence that early humans lived here for over 7500 years before meeting other civilisations such as the Aztecs and Incas. The site of today’sEvans was first settled by men around 1819 when William Hudnut called it New Ross Township after his home country Scotland. He built a log cabin which still stands today in what is now known as Tryon Park Square off North Main Street in downtown Evansville In 1827 John Sibley arrived from Illinois with his wagon train and claimed land east of the Arkansas River as part of Treaty 3 between Utes (native Americans) and US forces under Major General Andrew Jackson This claim would later become Haskell County . A post office called “New Ross” was established at what is now Tryon Park Square on January 15th, 1830 under Acting Postmaster Colonel James Hutton . On December 14th, 1830 Arthur Winchester set out from Fort Laramie with six oxen driven overland through cold weather conditions searching for water sources nearpresent day Denver he finally reached Evanston near present day Leadville on February 17th 1831 during winter months However due to avalanches most supplies failed including ammunition Winchester decided not to press further into Colorado In 1832 Brigham Young purchased some 640 acres surrounding Evanston from Hudnut giving him exclusive use for twelve years along with provisions for 400 settlers At this time much of what is currently Evans County took form including parts north of Platte River although these areas would come fully under US control after Utahjoined Colorado Territory following Indian Removal From Here until 1861 Southwestern Railway lines passed through town limits making it possible for farmers to get goods into eastern Denver bypassing easternEvansvillage

As Evans grew, it became an important trading post for surrounding counties and a center for education and industry. The population reached 10,000 by 1900 and 20,000 by 1940; but during the Great Depression Evans slid into obscurity until becoming a focal point for drug abuse and crime during the late 1980s and 1990s. In recent years, however, development has revived Evans as a popular tourist destination with attractions including an amusement park, old theaters, restaurants, hotels, and shopping malls.
Evans is located in the southeast corner of Colorado and bordered by Longmont to the south, Arapahoe County to the east, and Park County to the west. Evans was founded on December 10, 1868, when a group of men from nearby Longmont decided to start a town in what is now Evans. The land for the town was donated by General John Evans and his wife Nancy. The first post office was opened in 1870. In 1875, James Irvine became the first mayor of Evans. In 1902, Evans incorporated as a city and began to grow rapidly due to its proximity to other towns in Arapahoe County and Park County. In 1910, Evans annexed part of Longmont so that it would have more residents within its jurisdiction. By 1920, Evans had over 50 businesses and 100 citizens. In 1925, Mayor Harry Edwards announced that he would not seek another term because he felt he had accomplished all that he wanted to do as mayor. Due to this announcement, many people predicted that Evans would become an agricultural center like Peoria or South Jordan but instead it exploded into cityhood with rapid growth thanks in part to annexation byLongmont again in 1930 which increased housing density while providing transportation options for residents commuting into neighboring cities
