The Evans Marine Museum has a rich history of marine gift giving. The museum was started in 1978 by two local businessmen, Don and Gayle Evans. They were inspired to start the museum after they learned that many of the artifacts from the Evans Bay oil field were being passed down as tradition gifts to their children. Today, the Evans Marine Museum has over 30 items on display including World War II era Naval torpedoes, an Americanflagship warship replica, and various fishing gear and equipment. There is also a collection of maritime memorabilia from around the world. The museum is open everyday 9am-4pm with free admission for visitors age 3 and up. She was a dedicated teacher and researcher who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
In 1896, Evans was founded as a small farming town by Evan C. Evans and his family. The town grew rapidly due to its location in the fertile and irrigated land of the Colorado River Valley. By 1907, Evans had a population of over 100 people and was known for its agriculture, ranching, and mining communities. In 1912, Evans became the capital of Weld County after it was created from part of Douglas County. During World War I, the town served as an ammunition dump for the allies. After the war ended, Evans continued to grow as a city with its own government and economy. The city's growth led to problems such as annexation by other cities and lack of infrastructure necessary for an urbanized area. After more than 50 years of growth in Evans, the city limits were expanded in 2003 to include most of Aurora County.
