The Evans Shotgun Museum is a history museum located in Evans, Colorado that specializes in the collection and exposition of firearms. The museum was founded in 1984 by businessman Milton R. Hinton, who donated his collection of shotguns to the town. In 2006, the Evans Gunsmiths Association was formed to support the museum and its staff. The association offers classes on shotgunsmithing and other gun topics. On July 6, 1907, Captain Harry W. Bechtel purchased a 12 gauge shotgun from Ulysses S. Grant at auction for $1,500 dollars. This shotgun would be used as Bechtel's army rifle for three years until World War I ended without it being used in combat. When World War I ended, Bechtel sold his shotgun to George Washington Kerr for $2,000 dollars which he then gave to the Evans Shotgun Museum as a donation in 1918. In 1951, Mrs. Lillian Wiegand donated her collection of antique shotguns to the museum which included five 12 gauge shotguns including one that had been owned by President John F Kennedy while he was serving as an ambassador to England during the 1950s-60s). Evans is a small town in Adams County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2010 census. Evans is located in the eastern Rocky Mountains and is bordered by the towns of Aspen to the north, Fruita to the east, Glenwood Springs to the south-east, and Eichenwalde to the south-west. Evans is named after General George Armstrong Custer who was killed in 1868 during the Battle of Little Bighorn. The first settler in Evans was John Haggerty who arrived in 1865. He mined coal near what is now Evans Mesa while his son Harry founded Haggerty's Store in 1867. Haggerty also built a log cabin on what is now North Main Street. The first post office was established in 1870 and was called "Pine Creek". A store and school were both erected here before 1870 when it became known as "Evans". In 1876, Wm. Pugh opened a grocery store on South Main Street which became known as "Pugh's". In 1888, Thomas Gentry opened a restaurant called Gentry's Place which became well known for its excellent home cooked meals. The original isolating fence around Evans Mesa was constructed by Jno Nolen while he worked for Lewis & Clark Coal Company in 1892-1893. It served as an early warning system against couldaries that had become common around mines because they would indicate whether or not mining operations were going well or not. A post office has been established at Evans since 1870; it changed its name several times over its history including Evan Post Office from 1880-1885 to 1886-1900; 1900 until 1907; 1907 until 1912; then back to Evans until 1971 when it closed due to low mail volume caused by new postal service technology changes introduced with Interstate Highway 68 (I-68). The first school bus service began operation here on October 22nd, 1941 from Glenwood Springs via Aspen serving students from grades one through twelve across Adams County along with picks up and drop off services for those students attending local high schools outside of Glenwood Springs west of I-28/Upper Arkansas River Bridge (later renamed I-25) into Estes Park where students transferred onto buses continuing their journey eastward towards Denver or westwards towards Fort Collins/Loveland etcetera
