The Fort Collins Air Force Base Museum has a rich history that began in 1948. The base was the home of the 1st Colorado Air National Guard Squadron, which became the 1st Bombardment Wing after it was activated in 1951. In 1957, it was moved to its current location and renamed Rocky Mountain Arsenal. In 1966, the wing changed its name to the 303d Bombardment Wing and became an all-weather strategic bombardment wing. The wing flew Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft for operations over Iraq and Afghanistan from 2006 through 2011. In 2013, when Colorado’s Congressional delegation decided not to renew fighter jet funding for FY2014, Fort Collins AFB again became home to one of Colorado’s only propeller-driven jet aircraft – the KC-135 Stratotanker! In 1954 Congress authorized assignment to various wings within Tactical Flying Training Command (TFTC), then known as Eighth Air Force Headquarters (HQ8AF). HQ8AF became operational on 4 October 1954 when it activated at Fairchild AFB near Spokane Valley Idaho under command of First Lieutenant General James Henson with headquarters located at Kelly AFB near San Antonio Texas. On 15 January 1955 HQ8AF moved from Fairchild AFB to Wright-Patterson AFB northcentral Ohio becoming Headquarters Southern Air Defense Command (SADC). Inactivated on 30 September 1992 when Headquarters USAF was transferred to Shaw AFB California also becoming Headquarters Southern Air Defense Command (HASDCROSS).
