As one of humanity’s oldest beverage habits, caffeine has long been enjoyed by humans for its stimulating properties. Coffee was first roasted beans from wild plants and then ground into a drinkable form about 2500 years ago. Coffee began to be cultivated in Africa about 2200 BC and spread to other parts of the world about 1700 BC. In Europe, roasted beans were first brewed commercially in 1290 AD with two major exceptions – espresso (made from Turkish black beans) originated in Italy circa 1555 AD, while bianco (a light brown or red bean) was first brewed in Florence, Italy c 1600 AD. Coffee originally consisted only of water and beans which were ground together using small stones or pestles. Roasted beans became popular because they could easily go bad due to their high moisture content which made them susceptible to spoilage.
