When Fort Collins was founded in 1887, the United States Coast Guard was the only agency providing law enforcement and security on the Colorado River. The first Coast Guard station in Fort Collins was established at the mouth of Fountain Creek. In 1914, Fort Collins became part of the newly formed Denver-Aurora metropolitan area. The adjacent city of Aurora became home to both the Colorado Springs Police Department and Headquarters for Headquarters District (Denver) of U.S. Customs and Border Protection when that agency was created in 1998. Today, there are five Coast Guard stations located within Greater Fort Collins: 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment; 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines; 5th Battalion, 6th Marines; 8th Marine Aircraft Wing Pacific/Fort Lewis Detachment (7th Fleet); and Station Alpha-6 which is also home to UAS-4 West Point helicopter squadron VH-2E Bird Dog helicopters operated by Naval Air Warfare Center Patuxent River. Additionally, two float planes provide a mobile presence along Highway 12 between Canon City and Golden from May through September each year as part of Operation Coastal Watch Seasonal Enforcement Program

Fort Collins, Colorado is a city in Southern Colorado, United States. The population was 34,897 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins-Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fort Collins were fur traders in the 1860s and 1870s. A small trading post was built in 1887 by David Laird and named Fort Larimer after John Larimer, a settler who had helped purchase land for the post. In 1896, Denver went through a bond issue which funded construction of a new military fortification called Castle Rock on the confluence of Sweetwater Creek and Fountain Creek west of downtown Denver. After years of construction and testing, Castle Rock became operational on July 14, 1903 under the command of Major General George Armstrong Custer as part of United States Forces Europe in World War I. The fortifications served as an artillery control center for artillery fire on German forces retreating from Battle Of Verdun during World War I. In 1921, Fort Collins Municipal Airport was opened with runway 1/3 at its present location; it served as Fort Collins' commercial airport until it was closed in 1964 due to budget cuts required by federal Aviation Administration plans to buildPhoenix International Airport closer to downtown Denver. That same year also saw the opening of Interstate 25 between Aurora and Loveland;; however this highway did not cross into Fort Collins until much later when Interstate 70 replaced I-25 eastward from Loveland Boulevard south past University Circle into town limits. After years of decline due to lack of investment and high costs associated with increased transportation options brought on by suburban development near downtownDenverand elsewhere in SouthwestColorado.,the city council voted 5-2 on November 8th 2002 to approve a resolution creating Historic Preservation District designation for portions of Downtown FtCollins including Main Street & Cheyenne Avenue; Market Place & Third Avenue; Lafayette Square & Arsenal Road; Volunteer Park & 7th Street South; State Capitol building - all areas within boundaries defined as being significant historically because they are associated with pioneer settlement or commerce within or across Western Colorado during late 19th century.– This action marked an important turning point for Downtown FtCollins since it initiated reclamation efforts that remain ongoing today

The history of Fort Collins begins with its founder, Major General George Custer. Custer was born in 1846 in what is now Buffalo Gap, Iowa. He graduated from West Point in 1861 and joined the Union Army under General Grant’s command during the American Civil War. Afterward, Custer served at various posts throughout eastern North America before being called to lead cavalry troops into battle against Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians near present-day Laramie County, Wyoming Territory on December 13th, 1876. In this encounter known as “Custer”s Last Stand’ Custer was fatally struck by an arrow while leading his horse into battle and died shortly thereafter. Fort Collins began rapid growth following Custers death and soon became one of major regional hubs for trade and commerce. In 1907, Fort Collins assumed control of County Seat status from Pueblo after it emerged as one of five voting cities within territorial Colorado granted this distinction by then-Governor John Romer based on its importance as a commercial center withinColorado’sand placed significant emphasis upon economic development opportunities for residents therein.
