Fort Collins, Colorado is a city located in the Rocky Mountains of western Colorado. The population was 14,291 at the 2010 census. Fort Collins is home to the University of Colorado-Boulder and various other research institutions. The city also has a large park system and an extensive network of trails that provide scenic views of the surrounding mountains. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fort Collins were Spanish soldiers who passed through the area in 1540. The area became part of Mexico after independence from Spain was gained in 1810. For a time, Fort Collins served as both capital of New Mexico and as the interim capital while Santa Fe was built on nearby Albuquerque's former site. Colorado Territory was organized in 1876 and Fort Collins became its first official municipality. In 1886, work began on what would become Christian Rockingham Elementary School, which opened in 1918 as one of only a few schools established within Colorado's newly created territory. The current incarnation of Fort Collins began to take shape around 1920 when businesses donated land for a new downtown district; construction started on what would become Centennial Hall (later renamed Will Rogers Memorial Library) and Park headquarters soon thereafter. This period marked an immense expansion for the city with much development taking place along Central Avenue including many small businesses and residences that still call downtown home today despite having been replaced by larger structures over time. In 1951, FtCollins received international acclaim when it hosted world championship wrestling at Regis Stadium which helped establish the city as an entertainment mecca for Westerners interested in watching professional wrestling highlights from all over the world live instead of just from Denver or their home state USA Today reported at the time!
