Fort Collins, Colorado is a city located in the Rocky Mountains of Western Colorado. The population was 590 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Yuma County and the home to both Boeing Co. and Fort Collins-basedColorado State University. The area now known as Fort Collins was founded by soldiers from New Mexico in 1864 during the American Civil War. The first settlers were men from Santa Fe who arrived in August 1864. They created a small town called West Fort Collins, which stands today on what is now Hillcrest Drive between Aspen Avenue and I-25 south of Interstate 25 west of downtown Fort Collins. In 1875, Major General James Haggerty ordered Colonel George Atherton (United States Army) to build a military post here named for him on land that had been donated by ranching pioneer Don Carlos Ramirez Montoya. At first, only officers and their families were allowed to live there; later it became open to everyone regardless of rank or social standing. Haggerty also built artillery batteries here along with cavalry patrols and an hospital for wounded Unionists returning from the Mexican–American War
