The National Guard in Fort Collins, Colorado has a long and storied history. The fort was founded in 1876 as the first military post in what is now Colorado. It was named for General John A. Logan, who led Ulysses S. Grant’s army during the Mexican-American War (1867-1870). Logan also served as governor of Colorado from 1875 to 1879. The first unit in Fort Collins was organized on December 4, 1861. The National Guard at Fort Collins played an important role in support of the Union during the American Civil War. After the war, the units were disbanded and re-organized several times until they were finally merged into one battalion on October 1, 1923.

The first people to live in what is now Fort Collins were Indian traders and settlers from the Northwest Territories who traveled south in search of food and trade goods with the Spanish Empire. In 1821, Ulysses S. Grant moved his military forces eastward from Dodge City, Kansas to build Fort Elliott on an artificial hillock near what is today downtown Fort Collins. This fort served as a base of operations for Indian Wars fought against Native Americans up until 1846 when it was abandoned due to lack of supplies and troops. In 1864, after General John J. Pershing's Expedition drove the Cheyenne and Arapaho out of their traditional hunting grounds in central Colorado, civilian construction began on Ft. Collins as a supply depot for the Union Army during the Civil War. By 1865 FtCollins had become known as "The Arsenal" because of its importance to Union arms production during the war years alone! In 1907 Fort Collins became home to one of Colorado's first high school districts when Republican Congressman Hiram Johnson opened North Central High School (now North Central Community College) here on Main Street just north of town center! Today North Central offers over 100 programs including engineering/civil engineering majoring; business/marketing majoring; criminal justice majoring; health sciences majoring; law enforcement/security majors; psychology minors; music degrees such as voice or instrumental music education and concert promotion courses etc.; agriculture undergraduate degree program (extensive research agronomy programs available); veterinary medicine undergraduate degree program (major in animal husbandry available). Fort Collins is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, located on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains. The population was 15,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fort Collins were traders and fur trappers in 1819. They named it "Ft. Collins" for General James Haldimand's troops who had been stationed there during the Mexican War and who called this area around Banff Springs "The Bent." In 1827, Colonel George Arapaho established a post here to protect travelers on the Santa Fe Trail from Native American raiders. Arapaho's post lasted until 1868 when it was abandoned because of construction of the Ute Hill Railroad across Weld County. In 1876, gold was discovered near Telluride and local miners began working earnestly to find this valuable resource. On October 16, 1876 (the day after Thanksgiving), United States Exploring Expedition No. 5 led by Captain John Condon explored Banff Springs while searching for gold prospects in Weld County; they found no gold but did find some $5 million worth of silver mining claim warrants On November 8, 1886 (4 days after Christmas), Fort Collins incorporated as a city under state law which made it one of Colorado's original cities Along with Aurora and Greeley it became an important commercial center due to its location near Leadville and other mining towns in central Colorado This period also saw growth in theater attendance due to nearby Ft. Carson's proximity to Denver as well as show business developments such as The Crawford Palace Theater which opened in 1888 Fort Collins experienced significant housing development following World War II with many new homes being built east of Main Street along Interstate 25W between I-25R and I-25S . Many similar housing types were built throughout Colorado during this time including ranchstyle style dwellings known as "chamberlain houses",adobe building styles dubbed "adobe bungalows," Tudor Revival style residences known as "bungalowettes", gabled roofed dwelling styles called "gable roofs" or simply called "roofs," boxy Bungalows/Townhouses/"Tudor Townhomes", Postwar Moderne styled structures commonly referred to as ' Modernist' designs featuring pointed arches or ribbed vaults etc., etc., finally culminating with cowboy baronial styled structures popularly called 'Gothic' design characterized by elaborate detailing typically featuring spindles down each side of eaves and pointy buttresses etc., etc.. These various housing types represent major changes withinColorado architecture during this time
