Fort Collins, Colorado is a city in the United States. It is the county seat of Larimer County and lies on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains. The population was 993 at the 2010 census. Fort Collins was founded in 1868 by officers of the Ulysses S. Grant Expedition as a military post to protect travelers along the Overland Trail from Indian attacks. In 1902, it became an incorporated town, and in 1907 it became a city when its citizens voted to secede from neighboring Pueblo County. The city has since expanded rapidly with annexed settlements near Grand Junction and Durango. The original Fort Collins fortification was built in 1868 on land donated by Colonel George A. Custer, who had been commandant of Fort Lee during the Mexican–American War and then served as governor of Colorado Territory before being given ownership of what is now Larimer County. The fortification consisted of three bastions: one on top of another alongosite Main Street; one east off US-6 between Purgatory Road and First Avenue; and one south off Cove Creek Road between Broadway Boulevard and East Seventh Street (now Grand Avenue). During World War I, Fort Collins was used as an airfield for American forces fighting in Europe; during World War II it functioned as a base for aircraft production at Rockwell International Airport near San Diego until redevelopment closed that airport in 1992 led to an increase in traffic congestion within FortCollins boundaries
