The Fort Morgan Air Force Base is home to the Colorado Air National Guard's 127th Airlift Wing, which flieslift and C-130 missions. The wing also operates a KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft for air refueling. Air Force deployments to Fort Morgan date back to World War II when the base was called Battle Mountain Field. It served as a training ground for fighter pilots from both the United States and Great Britain. From 1948 until 1959, the wing flew flyboys from RAF Fairford in England on Joint USAF/Royal Air Force flights training American pilots in aerial combat. In 1959, the wing became an all-weather unit and began providing strategic bombardment services against targets in Europe. In 1992, Fort Morgan AFB was reactivated as an airfield serving Colorado's aerospace industry with Republic F-14 Tomcat fighter jets. As part of this activation, Republic Aviation donated four F-14s and three EMB-115T trayless refuelers to be used at Fort Morgan AFB along with other equipment and supplies needed for the new operations. The Army's 9th Airlift Squadronequipped with DC-9s provides helicopter transport to various events at the base such as parades, funerals and other functions that require access to Interstate 25 outside of town. In that year, Operation Overlord resulted in widespread destruction throughout Nazi Germany, including extensive damage to strategic targets such as factories, bridges, transportation networks and key military installations. As a result, it was decided that airlift would be an essential part of postwar reconstruction efforts in Germany. Accordingly, on July 15th, 1945 – one week after liberation from Nazi Germany – the USAF deployed C-46 Globemaster III aircraft along with 456 other Aircraft from Tactical Air Command (TAC) at RAF Mildenhall near London. These planes were used for transport purposes only; no combat operations took place. Fort Morgan was founded in 1868 by Captain James H. Wilkinson and his command of the 1st Infantry Regiment of Colorado Volunteers. The fort was located on an east-west road about 8 miles southeast of Morrison. It was purpose built as a military post to protect travelers and settlers on the Santa Fe Trail, and served as such until 1892 when it became a stagecoach depot. In 1912, Fort Morgan was renamed Fort Worth after General George W. Buell who had been recently named commander in chief of all United States forces in Europe. The fort saw less use during World War II because so much development took place at nearby Alamogordo Army Air Field. However, due to its location on the old trading routes, Fort Morgan has continued to be a popular tourist destination for people from throughout the region. From its inception until it closed in 1992, Fort Morgan played an important role in Colorado history and culture which is still remembered today.
