Fort Morgan, Colorado was founded in 1867 as a military post and has served as an ammunition depot, cavalry post, and arsenal. The fort was renamed Fort Morgan on July 15, 1912 in honor of General George Custer. On December 12, 1916 the fort was renamed Fort Hays after Major General James H. Hays who had been instrumental in leading the Army's effort to suppress the Indian Wars in Kansas. In 1951 the fort became an armory with gunpowder storage facilities and later artillery rounds storage. It is now a museum dedicated to 4th Infantry Division soldiers from World War II-1949 and their families. The 4th Infantry Division arrived in Fort Morgan on September 17, 1944 from Germany as part of Operation Torch which aimed to invade North Africa. The division fought its way through Algeria and Tunisia until arriving at Oran on October 16th where they were committed to fighting against Axis forces under Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. The division fought throughout North Africa until it relieved troops at Tunis on January 8th 1945 before returning home on February 3rd 1945. After being back home for only two months when hostilities ended with Japan's surrender, the division took part in operations against Okinawa during the summer of 1945 which led to its first major victory since landing on Okinawa Bay four years earlier. Following World War II, Fort Morgan underwent several renovations including new barracks construction along with enlargement of engine plant (the first time this had been done within the old munitions depot). These enhancements allowed for increased troop strength while also accommodating more vehicles and other equipment necessary for garrison duties such as providing fire support for law enforcement activities or staging parades or concerts etcetera. In 1957 a new command center was constructed adjacent to barracks 1st Battalion 2nd Regiment while another renovation project increased troop space by 50%. This expansion project also included installation of air conditioning which allowedfortress commanders greater flexibility when planning events or possible evacuations without affecting daily operations . Additionally fortifications were improved including replacement of loopholes in parapets with strengthened brickwork Additionally concrete revetments were erected around all entrances/exit points inside fortress together with addition of concert stage area aft of parade ground . In 1970 additional renovation projects began incorporating better mortar compatibility within existing walls such as replacement of original roof tiles resulting in improved resistance to fire Additionally new electrical wiring resulted in increase availability for both heating & cooling systems among other amenities . A brand new shopping mall opened up next door which necessitated large amount of security posted around property ..... Finally changes came about due to increasing civilian population density & incorporation into global community ..... New annexes were built adjoining army bases creating need for even more security measures

Fort Morgan was founded on December 24, 1867 by the military governor of Colorado Territory Kit Carson and U.S. Army Colonel George Armstrong Custer as a detachment of 1,200 citizen volunteers to protect the Comanche Indian Nation from Apache raiding. The town grew quickly due to its location near Mexico City and its role as a trade center for agriculture and trade with the surrounding country. In 1886, Fort Morgan became an official Americanposttown under Postmaster General James Kapp's jurisdiction after it became part of the new Denver-Aurora area. The post office moved to its present location in 1903. During World War II, Fort Morgan played an important role in support of the war effort by providing munitions production capabilities for local manufacturers and housing troops on site until 1945 when it reverted back to civilian control under U.S Army command status until finally being annexed into Weld County on January 1, 1949. The fort served as a garrison and trading post until it was abandoned in 1848, when gold was found nearby. Fort Morgan reopened in 1850 as a civilian trading post, and grew into a major political and cultural center of Colorado after becoming known for its flour production and other goods exports. In 1861, the fort became an important staging ground for the Union army during the American Civil War, and later served as a military base for Mexican General Santa Anna during his attempt to overthrow Mexico's president Don Jose Antonio Meade. After Santa Anna's successful withdrawal from Mexican territory in 1868, Fort Morgan again reverted to civilian hands until it closed in 1924.
