Fort Morgan is a town located in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 10,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Fort Morgan was José de Arista on April 14, 1819. He named it "Nuestra Señora de las Animas" (Our Lady of Bones) after a Catholic shrine in Mexico City that he had seen. The citizens of Fort Morgan petitioned for annexation by Denver in 1872 and their request was granted on November 16th that year. They were given the right to bear arms and establish themselves as an independent municipality with its own government within seven years. In 1907, George Arapaho set up camp next door to what is now called Old Timer's Bar and Grill for the Navajos who were living there at the time. Today, this location hosts annual Indian Fairs which are also open to the public from October 1st through December 15th each year. On January 26th, 1861, while skirmishing with Specimen Company C of the 14th Ulysses S Grant's 6th Cavalry Regiment west of Fort Hays during Salt Creek Campaigns near present-day Pueblo County line, 2nd Lt John Waddy ordered his men into assault formation then led them down a ravine onto an impenetrable hillock covered with dense shrubs and underbrush where they remained without orders or retreat until relieved by other units some 400 yards distant when they again ordered into column marched back across country without halting until arrived at their original position on opposite banks of Cache River about 5 miles east ofpresent-day Ft Riley . This was one episode in what became known as "The Little Bighorn". On July 8th 1863 Captain James Moore commanding detachment 23rd Infantry Nevada Volunteers reported Killed/wounded 9 officers and 68 enlisted men including Lieutenants John Rodgers (2d Lieutenant), Samuel Potter (1st Lt), Augustus Childs (2nd Lt) Ensign William Gassett(Cdr), Private First Class David Ballou(PFC) - total 27 killed , 12 missing and 5 captured
