Fort Morgan was founded in 1858 by Captain John H. Carmody and his men as a cavalry post on the east bank of the Animas River. The fort was soon expanded to include a stockade, barracks, and other buildings. The fort served as a military outpost for years until it was abandoned in 1861 due to the Civil War. In 1868, Fort Morgan was reopened as a trading post by Major General James K. Polk with the goal of facilitating trade between Colorado and Mexico. As commerce grew at Fort Morgan, so did speculation that it could be used as a base for operations against Mexico if necessary. In 1875, Major General George Armstrong Custer made an attempt to march his forces through Fort Morgan but were met with resistance from local Indian Chief Black Hawk who refused to let Ulysses S. Grant cross his land without first murdering several hundred unarmed civilians. Eventually Custer’s forces reached Mexican soil while Black Hawk remained defiantly entrenched at Fort Morgan. Fort Morgan saw many changes during its history including multiple occupations by both sides in the Civil War and during Reconstruction period following the war. After the end of the war, FortMorgan became an arsenal where ammunition and supplies were stored before being sent off to various units across Colorado in order to support their campaigns during Reconstruction. It also saw use as a prison after numerous Union soldiers were tried for crimes against humanity or complicity in these crimes while stationed at FtMorgen

Fremont and the fort was built to protect the new settlers from Apache Indians. The fort served as a military post until it was destroyed in 1868 by an Indian attack. The town continued to exist as a ghost town until it was abandoned in 1951.
