The fort was destroyed in 1876 and replaced with Fort Myer. Fort Morgan is now a state park and part of the Denver-Aurora metropolitan area. The first white people to live in what is now Weld County were men who traveled through the region on their way to find new land for fur trading purposes. In 1827, Major George Armstrong Custer and his party of Ulysses S. Grant’s army passed through this area and made landfall at what is now Fort Morgan on July 10th,1827. There are several stories about how this event happened; one story has Custer being saved by friendly Native Americans while others say he was captured and then sold into slavery by the Mexicans. Regardless of the truth, this event served as a sign that these people were not alone in their quest for new land east of the Rockies! In 1872, when General Crook decided that he wanted to secure a route overland from California into Mexico City via New Mexico Territory, he ordered Colonel John J Pershing to build an armament depot at Fort Morgan on August 16th, 1872 under the provisions of an exchange treaty between Great Britain and Mexico that had been ratified two weeks earlier! This depot would serve as a base from which Pershing could surveil Mexican borderlands along with providing munitions for local militias combating Apache Indians who were terrorizing nearby towns! Due to its strategic location within easy reach of both Albuquerque (New Mexico) and Durango (Chihuahua), Fort Morgan quickly became known as one of Crook’s most important military installations! During his tenure as Commanding Officer (1875-1877), Colonel John J Pershing also developed trails leading down into Chihuahua Valley so that wagon trains could be unloaded there without having to cross dangerous rivers! Fort Morgan was founded in 1824 by Colonel George Armstrong Custer and his brigade of U.S. cavalrymen as a frontier post on the east bank of the San Juan River. The site, which is now part of Fort Morgan County, Colorado, was chosen because it offered excellent access to water resources and trade routes. Fort Morgan served as a trading post until 1849, when it became a military base under the command of General John Douglas. In 1862, following the Mexican-American War, Fort Morgan was renamed Camp Grant after General Ulysses S. Grant who had served as its commander during that conflict. The fort saw extensive combat in that war; in fact, it fell to Union forces on July 16, 1863. It continued to serve as a military outpost until 1898 when it closed down due to increasing civilian population and economic problems within the army barracks atCamp Grant (now Auraria Campus).
