Grant ordered General George Armstrong Custer’s 5th Cavalry Regiment to protect American mining interests in what is today Wyoming Territory while his army fought off an attack by German forces at Rocky Ford outside modern day Cheyenne Wells Fargo station on July 26th that year On October 16th 1876 Major John J Blanchard organized an independent group called “The Mounted Rangers” to hunt down Indian raiders throughout western Colorado Springs area including Pueblo Hills east of present-day Golden Gate Park while troops under Majors John L Stroud (5th Colo) & Hiram Maxim (9th Mo) patrolled from Trinidad Barracks southward along Victoriano Road . It was this mounted cavalry unit which ultimately ended Indian raids throughout Monument Valley area some 30 miles northwest of FtMormon where most Ranchos & Villages had been gathered around early 1800’s for fur trade purposes only 6 miles due west from FtMormon
