The National Guard has been in Fort Morgan, Colorado since 1907. The first National Guard unit to arrive was the 5th Infantry Regiment in 1907. In 1917, the National Guard absorbed the Civilian Conservation Corps and became a branch of the military. In 1940, Fort Morgan became an Army Base and began to accept units from all over the United States. In 1951, Fort Morgan began accepting units from Canada as well. From 1957-1958, Ft. Morgan also began accepting units from South Korea as part of their Korean War support program. Fort Morgan, Colorado was established in 1864 as a result of the Santa Fe Expedition. The fort was built on thesite of an old Comanche chief's trading post and used to protect the travelers during their journey through Apache territory. In 1867, Fort Morgan became part of the United States Army and was renamed Fort Carson. It played a significant role in the Mexican-American War by providing supplies and munitions to American forces. After Mexico signed a peace agreement with America in 1902, Fort Carson reverted back to its original name and functioned as a military base until it closed in 1912. Today, Fort Morgan is a popular tourist destination for hike, visit the visitor center, take public tours of the fort, or view art exhibits at nearby Gallery Place Museum.
