Fort Morgan was founded in 1867 as a post on the San Juan River by United States Colonel John S. Butler and his men. The fort served as a military garrison for the area until it was abandoned in 1881. The fort is now a cultural and historical landmark located in Fort Morgan, Colorado. The first European settlers to enter the area were Spanish traders and cowboys, who established trading posts along the San Juan River. In 1867, Colonel John S. Butler decided to establish a military post near what is now Fort Morgan to protect settlement on the river. He named the post after his home state of Kansas, where he had been stationed as an artillery officer during the Mexican-American War. In 1868, General James Hays appointed Butler commander of all west Texas forces while they fought against Mexico in that year’s American Civil War. When hostilities ended, Butler returned east and resumed command of Fort Morgan but resigned due to personal differences with Hays over strategy for west Texas at this time. In 1870, Major General Richard Wagoner replaced Hays as commander of all USwest Texas troops; however, Wagoner soon resigned due to health problems (he died later that year). Captain George Armstrong took command of Fort Morgan from Captain Armstrong’s replacement Lieutenant Colonel David Fitzgerald on 1 October 1870; Armstrong would stay at Fort Morgan until its abandonment in 1881 when it became part of Denver County. The first thing that visitors see when entering Fort Morgan are the cannons which still stand today from when it was used as a military garrison for West Tx troops duringt tha American Civil War - these cannons acted as an advertising billboard for businesses within town! Fort Morgan was founded in 1855 as a military post on the site of an older fort. Today, Fort Morgan is a popular tourist destination with its Historic District and Museum. The town of Fort Morgan was platted in 1865, and began to grow around the post in the 1870s. In 1907, Fort Morgan became a state park. In 1916, the U.S. Army transferred ownership of the post to Colorado State University; it remained part of CSU until it was sold to local businessman James Gorman in 1978. Gorman renamed the post Fort Morgan State Park and opened it to public use. The first settlers in what is now Fort Morgan arrived in 1836 when gold were discovered on nearby Canon City Mesa. A survey done by Major George Hinkle found that there were over 1,000 people living at this location; however, only about fifty-five moved into settlement because of lack of transportation or other resources. By 1840, more people had settled in what is nowFortMorgan due to available land and opportunities for trade with Mexicans outside Colorado Springs (the then capital). When hostilities broke out between Mexico and Texas over territory acquired from Mexico following Santa Anna's Insurrection, General John Custerordered his forces northward throughColorado Springs on July 8th 1846 seeking refuge from Mexican cavalry under Jose Comanche which had invaded southern Colorado Territory from New Mexico Territory (Albuquerque). After reaching Ft Union on July 12th he ordered his men across the San Juan River where they built huts for protection while supplies were brought upriver by ferryboat; after two days Custer ordered his men back across river without any attempt at battle because he realized that he would not be able to win if fight took place outside of Denver whereupon Mexican forces numbered about 60 thousand strong including 6 thousand cavalry seemed almost certain victory given their superior numbers! In 1861, when Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House along with all his artillery east of Richmond Virginia Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Lyon organized three regiments consisting mostly Missourians: 1st Missouri Volunteer Infantry Regiment (Union), 2nd Missouri Volunteer Infantry Regiment (Confederate), 3rd Kansas Cavalry Regiment (Confederate) numbering about 4500 total men under command of Captain David Hackett who reported that "There must have been less than 10 mounted men scattered throughout our brigade...we killed no one." On April 14th 1861 California become an independent republic but as Utah becameOklahoma on January 16th 1862 both states inherited all civil rights provided by Congress which did not include slavery so FtMormon ceased being part of Utah Territory when it joined statehood andbecame part of Colorado Territorial government effective February 24th 1862 In 1863 Gold Rush miners started arriving at FtMormon beginning work on Cannonball Canyon Road near present day Golden; within months numerous small towns sprang up around campgrounds including Beaumont(later Pueblo) serving locals until rail service arrived later that year followed by stores catering to miners general merchandise such as flour, candles etc.; stagecoaches running between Gunnison City &Pueblo ran daily stopping here for passengers en route south bound along Cannonball Canyon road via Independence Pass On November 5th 1864 Second Battle Of Glenwood Springs occurred west side OF THE FORT MORGAN FORT MOUNTAIN IN GLENWOOD SPRINGS COUNTY WHEN AMERICAN ARMY CROSSED CANON BALLOON ROAD DOCTOR JONES AND HIS PARTY WAS SPECIFICALLY ORDERED TO ATTACK MISSOURIAN MILITARY TROOPS ON THAT DAY AS ENEMY WERE LINING UP NEAR US BUT THEY FAILED TO HEAR OR SEE OUR OFFICERS OUTRIDE THEIR LINE STOPING THEM FROM ENTERING INTO OUR FORT THANK GOD FOR GOOD SHOT BY COLONEL WILLIAMS WITH HIS RIFLE WHICH KILLED MORE THAN 20 MILITARY MEN AND WITHOUT THAT ACTION WE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DEFEND OUR POST AGAINST AN ENTIRE ARMY OF MORE THAN 100 MANNERS

The fort served as a supply depot for the Union army and was also used to detain Confederate prisoners of war. In 1862, Fort Morgan was renamed Fort Lyon after General James B.
