As a result, General Tom Ross ordered his entire army to abandon all remaining posts along the eastern edge of Douglas County in order to retreat back into Kansas Territory under cover of nightfall (18 68). A large part of this army consisted of civilian volunteers known as "the ill-fated 10." These men were poorly equipped and led by inexperienced officers who made heavy losses during their advance through rugged country laden with mountains and obstacles; nevertheless, they managed to reach safety without being engaged any actual combat or infliction upon friendly Indians... In reality however [the] 10 largely failed because they did not have support from either high ranking officers or other senior enlisted men within their unit... A few years later (1872), after President Ulysses S Grant had evacuated Westphalia following its victory over Mexico in The Mexican War (1846-48), he authorized Major General George Armstrong Custer to lead an expedition into eastern Colorado seeking revenge on behalf of Ulysses S Grant's father... After months' travel across difficult terrain culminating at what is now Cheyenne Mountain National Monument east of Fort Collins,...Custer’s column reached Ft. Morgan on November 17th after routing 30 miles wide[sic]of hostiles thereon[sic], thus ending six days戦[sic] which began on October 25th..................................................................... By December 3rd all but one regiment having been lost................................. Aftermath: On December 4th General Custer ordered his commanders...... That morning Cavalry Captain Edward Robinson led 4 mounted soldiers out onto snowcovered Mesa Verde plateau whereupon 12 rounds explodedfrom caves around them killing 3 horsemen & Capt Robinson....................... Two weeks later another detachment led by LtCol John Wesley Powell advanced down San Miguel Creek valley 40 milesinto Arizona................................ [...] A force composed almost entirelyof civilians including women & children driven before them crossed Grande Ronde reservoir Feb 8 1870 unloading stores wagons four abreast & marched 150 Miles thru Arizona scrub Desert without opposition............ This forced march became known as "Mojave Desert" campaign
