Fort Morgan is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 771 at the 2010 census. Fort Morgan was founded on February 14, 1859 by U.S. Army Captain John C. Fremont and his men as a staging area for their failed expedition to find the Santa Fe Trail. It became an American Indian reservation in 1868 and then part of the Denver-Aurora Railroad company until it was bought by City of Aurora Utilities Company in 1951. The railroad abandoned most of its tracks within Fort Morgan in 1966, leaving it with a single track main street and no services other than gas stations and convenience stores. In 1984, the city of Fort Morgan voted to annex portions of the Mexican town La Mesa due to growing complaints from residents about development there without proper consent from Mexican authorities or granting land titles that would allow for such development; annexation procedures were completed in 1985. In 1997,Fort Morgan voters passed a resolution calling for the incorporation of the town into the larger city; this proposal failed to gain passage but Mayor Rick Sladky has said he plans to bring it up again in future elections The fortifications around FortMorgan date back to 1859 when Colonel George Armstrong Custer's forces attacked Pueblo de la Parra (now Pueblodel Arroyo) during his attempt to cross over into Mexico on what became known as The California Expeditionary Force ().
