They built a dock on the edge of the then-prairie to store goods they had brought overland from Mexico. Fountain is located on the eastern edge of the San Miguel Valley and includes parts of what are now Dinosaur National Monument and Mesa Verde National Park. Fountain, Colorado is a small town located in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 2,662 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins-Loveland-Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Fountain were the Kiowa and Comanche tribes. They called the area "the land of running water." In 1871, James Wickersham built a cabin near what is now the old post office. He named it Fountain after his hometown of Newburgh, New York. By 1875, there were three buildings in Fountain and one hundred people living there. The post office was founded in 1876 and remained open until it closed in 1951. The first school was organized in 1865 and was known as Stroud School. In 1870, William Hays started an agricultural cooperative that became known as United Farmers of Colorado (UFC). UFC helped to build irrigation systems for agriculture in the region. Thecommunity has two schools: Fountain Elementary School and Mountain View Junior/Senior High School; both are part of the Union Pacific School District..
