Fountain is located on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains and it is named after John Newton Fountain, a U.S. Congressman from 1872 to 1876. Fountain was founded in 1865 by individuals who were looking for a place to settle because there were no towns in that area at that time. The first post office was established in 1870 and received its name from John Newton Fountain, who had been elected as a U.S. congressman from Colorado in 1872-1876. After his death, his wife donated land to the town for a public square which would eventually become known as Fountain Square Park. The growth of Fountain began during World War I when many people moved into the area due to the warring factions fighting in Europe and America (the Denver-Aurora War). In 1925, Fountain incorporated as an unincorporated community under the name of "Fountain". For many years, fountain served as both an economic center for surrounding rural areas and also served as a source of water for numerous homeowners and businesses within walking distance of itssquare central parkesque location.
