Although there has been little written about the National Guard in Fountain, Colorado since the early 1900s, the militia system of government in that community dates back to 1875. The first national guard unit was organized on July 1, 1875 at Fort Logan by order of President Ulysses S. Grant. The unit consisted of fifty men and served for a year before being disbanded. In 1903, Colorado Senators John D. Rockefeller and Hiram Johnson sponsored a bill that authorized the erection of a state guard force to protect citizens from "vagrants" and “criminal element” in their state. On July 1st, 1903, sixty-six (66) men from Rifle City formed Company A, 2nd National Guard District at Ft. Logan under command of Major JB Fenton with Captain George Ewing as adjutant general and First Lieutenant Charles Laughlin as battalion commander. The first major event associated with the formation of this force occurred on October 3rd when twenty-two (22) members from Rifle City gathered at the Masonic lodge for drill purposes only to find out that they were not registered as militiamen with Denver Battalion No.1 due to their lack of uniforms! After some discussion it was decided that all Reservists within Rifle City would assemble together at Fourth & Arapahoe Streets on October 10th for parade review/drill by company commanders Captain George Ewing and First Lieutenant Charles Laughlin which resulted in an impressive 563 total yards covered during parade drill maneuvers! Company B reorganized themselves into two companies; Alpha & Bravo companies were organized on March 1st 1904 while Company C became Company D on April 15th 1904 when Second Lieutenant Jesse Prentice took command after First Lieutenant James Hickey was killed in action near Mogadishu Creek Bridge on October 8th 1904 during World War I service? On April 22nd 1907 Colonel John Waddell relieved Major JB Fenton who had served since January 1st 1906 due to an illness? This change followed reports that Major JF Welsh had been using road vehicles instead of his horse drawn ambulance which posed an engineering danger because artillery fire could be seen approaching from nearby Canon Mountain? AlthoughMajor John Waddell initially believed thatCaptain Jesse Prenticewas unfit for command he eventually given him charge effective May 7th 1907 due to problems between Captain Prentice and Second Lt William Meeks who held authority overAlpha Company? As conflicts developed between Captain Prenticeand Second lieutenant Meeks both Companies became communications failed units until finally Captains WaddellandPrentice agreed upon a plan wherebyAlphaCompanywouldreporttoSecondLieutenantMeeksuntilamechanicalrepaircouldbemade?? Majors headquarters changed name to Western Guards Armory soon thereafter????? In 1911 Officers grade officers were created including major generals??? Fountain is located in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 4,291 as of the 2010 census. Fountain is a small town on the edge of the Rocky Mountains. The townsite was laid out in 1865 by George A. Wright and named for Fountain Creek in Scotland. Fountains first water supply came from a Spring near Red Mountain and it continued to be used until 1893 when a new well was drilled about two miles west of town. At that time, Fountain began using brine pumped from an underground salt mine about three miles to the northwest. In 1903, the city of Greeley supplied water to both towns with its own facility. Today, Fountain continues to get its drinking water from Greeley's Municipal Water District while also getting supplies from local wells and springs. The population growth trend in Weld County has been positive over the past few decades; however, this has not resulted in an increase in housing prices or job opportunities as many young people have moved away for work or other reasons since Weld became more mired in economic recession than other counties within Colorado Springs metropolitan area during that time frame However some new development is happening such as a planned mixed-use project called "The Ridge" which will make use of land between Old Fort Collins Road and Western Avenue east of downtown which would allow for civic/commercial uses on one side while residential developments are planned on the other side overlooking Clear Creek Valley Park which would become another major tourist destination if completed
