Fountain is a small town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Westminster–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Fountain Creek and Fountain Reservoir Systems were created by the U.S. Army during World War I to provide water for soldiers and civilians in the area. The reservoirs are now operated by the City of Westminster as a public park and reservoir system. Fountain has five full-time businesses: two restaurants, one gas station/convenience store, one florist, and one hardware store; four seasonal businesses that operate during specific months: a pet groomer from May through September; an ice cream truck from October through December; and a Shakespeare production company from January through March. Fountain is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Junction Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fountain was founded in 1872 by Aria May Phelps and her husband John Phelps. The town grew up around two water wheels that used human power to turn a crank to generate the necessary groundwater supply for irrigation purposes. In 1902, Fountain became one of the first towns in the state to be established as an incorporated municipality. In 1956, Fountain became home to the first successful open-air nuclear reactor in Colorado when it was built at Rocky Flats National Monument by General Electric Company. However, soon after this event local opposition emerged from farmers and ranchers who saw no need for such a large plant within their rural area; it closed in 1970 due to environmental concerns. Today only traces of nuclear radiation remain aboveground thanks to monitoring carried out by Grand Junction National Laboratory; all other activities were discontinued thirty years ago. Fountain's economy has been primarily agricultural since its founding; however, over time there have been advances made in manufacturing and service sectors as well including various businesses located within walking distance of each other on Main Street (the former Route 66). In recent years there has also been an increase in tourism as a result of its many recreational opportunities available nearby including hiking and biking trails, swimming at Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Regional Park (6 miles away), and fishing from several public reservoirs located within easy reach of town limits.
