Fountain, Colorado is a small town located in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Aspen-Boulder-Denver Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fountain is known for its reservoirs and hiking trails. The first people to live in Fountain were Native Americans who hunted and gathered wild game in the area. In 1855, gold was found nearby and a rush began to build settlements around it. The town of Fountain was founded on July 10, 1855 by prospectors led by General James Hance. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Fountain and surrounding villages. Fountain has been called "thepocket of America" because of its location near two major U.S highways: I-25 and US 36 which connect Denver with other cities across the country. A new water system was built in 1928 to replace an older one that had proved disastrously inefficient. This system gives Fountain access to water from three mountain glaciers: Anahakhto (meaning "large rock"), Arapaho (meaning "grandfather") and Mesa Verde (meaning "mountain"). Fountain's namesake is a stream that runs through the town. Fountain began as two settlements: Fountain and Echo Creek. The first post office was established in 1872, and Fountain became a borough in 1893. In 1907, it merged with Grand Junction to form a single municipality called Fountain City. The first hotel in Fountain was built in 1892 by George Fenton and built on the site of an earlier cabin used for farming purposes by local farmers. A second hotel was erected in 1904 on the same site by Drury and Ladds Bros., who were also instrumental in developing aspects of downtownGrand Junction today. The original water tower still stands near Union Pacific Depot on Main Street (now US 158) west of town limits; this structure provided drinking water for residents of the town until 1951 whenthe city replaced it with its own water system using artesian wells dug beneath nearby residential areas In 1932, architect Vincent Scully designed what is now known as "Fountain's most renowned building" – the $10 million courthouse which opened its doors to the public on July 13, 1933 . For many years it functioned as home to Grand Junction's only municipal court until that tribunal relocated to Denver effective October 1, 2001 .)
