Fruita is a small town in eastern Colorado, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Fruita is part of the 8th Congressional District and is currently represented by Diana DeGette. For much of its history, Fruita was one of the most important communities in western Colorado because it was a key junction on the Pony Express Trail. The area that now makes up Fruita was first inhabited by Native Americans. A group of Mormons who had relocated from Nauvoo, Illinois founded a ranch in what is now Fruita in 1868. The original post office operations were conducted out of a building near what is now Main Street and Broadway (later called Park Avenue). In 1871, fruit trees were being grown on land owned by Brigham Young at what is now Justus Road and 3rd Street. In 1872-73 Mormon settlers built a school and harvested crops there before moving to their current location about three miles east on US Highway 14 where they began to build permanent residences. In 1890, when Boulder County was created from portions of Larimer County, Fruita became one of its largest towns with an estimated population of over 2,000 people employed in various businesses including flour mills, sawmills and other connections to the local agricultural industry that continued into the 20th century*. During World War II many fruit warehouses were built along I-25 between Denver and Cheyenne* (*see map below). At one point there were more than 100 such warehouses across Colorado alone! Many fruit growers also took advantage of advances in transportation technology as refrigerated trucks made it possible for fruits to be transported fresh from farms directly to grocery stores all over America†(*see maps below).
