Fruita is part of the Grand Junction metropolitan area. The community is named after Nicholas fruit traders who settled there in 1875. Fruita developed as a stop on stagecoach routes from Denver to Fort Collins and Loveland. By 1900, it had become a prosperous agricultural center with apple orchards and other fruits grown nearby. In 1916, Fruita became a city when its citizens approved an ordinance making it an incorporated village. During World War II, Fruita served as one of several U.S. Army airfields in Douglas County used for training pilots and troops during the war effort. After hostilities ended, many local businesses continued to operate until the early 1990s when economic conditions declined and many residents moved away or lost their jobs in new industries such as information technology and software development. A post office called Fruita was established in 1880, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first store opened in 1888 at 4235 North Peak Boulevard. By 1901, there were five stores located in the community with a total sales volume of $2 million. In 1899, the National Bank of Commerce became a bank and began to lend money to farmers around the region. By 1912 fruit processing had become an important industry with two mills producing seventy-two tons per day of Fresh Fruits products for local consumption or export to markets such as New York City and Chicago. In 1916 Major General George Custer arrived at Fort Collins with his cavalry brigade to study ranching techniques while on leave from the United States Army during World War I; he later purchased 2,000 acres (800 ha) within Fruita proper for grazing sheep and cattle which he used as pastureland for horses and war lambs until 1919 when he turned them into a national monument known as Custer Prairie Ranch Historic District #1A-4C
