Fruita is a town located in the U.S. state of Colorado, about 25 miles south of Denver. The population was 992 at the 2010 census and 1,521 as of 2019. Fruita is part of the Pueblo–La Plata Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in Fruita were two brothers, John and James McDowell, who platted the town in 1868 on land they had acquired from José Castro. The name originated with a fruit called "Fruita" (possibly meaning "fruitful"). In 1902, fruit grower Harry Cotten founded a cooperative that became one of the largest citrus production companies in the United States. In 1912, he donated 5 acres (20 hectares) to Fruita for use as an agricultural school after his home near State Highway 22 was destroyed by fire while he was away on business. Thanks to its location on an irrigation axis and its large orchards and vineyards, Fruita quickly became known throughout Colorado as "the Grape Capital of America". The population peaked at 1,827 in 1950 but has gradually declined since then due to increasing competition from other towns within easy driving distance of Denver such as Aurora and Littleton. Fruita, Colorado was founded in 1872 by George C. Smith and named after the fruit he found near his farm. The first post office in Fruita was established in 1874. In 1916, the Fruita Chamber of Commerce was organized and became a separate city within the state of Colorado. The population of Fruita grew to over 10,000 by 1950, when it merged with neighboring Longmont to form a single city. Today, Fruita is a vibrant and growing community that celebrates its diverse culture and history through its annual festivals and events. Fruita's rich history can be traced back to its founding as a small farming town located on the north side of the Animas River. By 1870, George C. Smith had settled in what is now Fruita and began operations as a farmer-couple. Soon, they began purchasing land east of the river for development into what would become known as "The Farm." Over time, other farmers followed Smith's lead and began to settle in or near Fruita; these early settlers were instrumental in developing the town into what it is today. During World War I, fruit trees were popular among soldiers because they provided them with fresh fruits and vegetables during combat deployments overseas. As war continued to escalate throughout Europe, demand for fruit increased significantly; this led to an increase in production at local farms and gardens across Colorado Springs as well as nationwide. This boom helped drive down prices for goods exported from Colorado Springs while also creating new opportunities for local businesses such as Smith's Farm & Market (later renamed Old Country Store). With more people living close together on large farms during this time period, social activities such as dances or picnics flourished; these events often featured music from local bands or clapped hands along with readings from locally written stories about pioneer life within The Farm community once again! In 1950, when Fruita merged with neighboring Longmont to form a single city under one mayor/city council system - something that had been attempted only twice before in Colorado - many felt that this was finally the right move for both communities! Today,fruitA enjoys significant growth due both to its expanding economy statewide (particularly thanks to oil discoveries) combined with its strong retail sector which continues to grow despite increasing competition King Soopers has brought online over the past few decades... Fruita is a town in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. The name "Fruita" is Spanish for "fruitful." The first settlers in Fruita were prospectors who came to the area in 1871. In 1875, a post office was established at Fruita and the town began to grow. In 1886, a dam was built by the US Army near Fruita and created Lake Fruita. The fruit industry soon became dominant in Fruita and many mills were built around the lake. This prosperity allowed for growth of the community and its schools became increasingly important as well. In 1926, residents voted to change their name to Fruita because they felt it more accurately reflected their town's current location and history. In 1941, World War II started and the city of Denver requested that all small communities within San Miguel County submit plans for proclaiming themselves "military towns." After much debate and back-and-forth between government officials and citizens, local media reported on December 2nd that Fruita had submitted its request and would be joining Denver as a military town effective January 1st of 1942. The announcement sparked excitement among local businesses who saw an opportunity to increase sales during wartime; however, there was no immediate impact on Fruita's economy. On January 17th of 1942 Pearl Harbor happened which led to increased patriotism across America; this caused demand for goods produced by San Miguel County companies to rise accordingly. By war's end on September 3rd 1944,[1] most of what had been shipped from our county had arrived in Seattle or other markets due to competition from abroad[2]. This event also total shutdowns at our two largest factories as workers took care of home mortgages while their employers search for new sources of income (see below).
