It remains one of Fruita’s darkest moments however it ultimately ended with a compromise agreement between MajGen Halsey Jr.?and some of his officers? This event helped solidify local support for the Marines and helped keep them here through thick and thin? Since then, numerous other memorable moments have occurred such as Sgt.?Rick Hauptman leading a unit onto roof top during Operation Desert Storm or Capt.(jg) John Kapp stepping up to lead an amphibious assault team during Operation Neptune’s Spear? Fruita was founded in 1872 by George and Lucy Churchman as a small community on the banks of the Animas River. It began as an agricultural town, supplying goods to surrounding villages. By 1907, fruit production had become so important that Fruita had its own hospital and school system. In 1913, however, when the Animas River flooded and destroyed most of downtown Fruita, citizens voted to move their town upstream into new territory called Garden City. With renewed attention to agriculture after World War II, fruit production declined in the early 21st century but has since been revived thanks to new technology and marketing strategies; today, about 60% of all local jobs are related to fruits and vegetables. The original settlers were German immigrants who named their village "Fruita." They arrived from Königsberg (Cologne) in 1848 on a raft smuggling potatoes across river rapids near present-day Grand Junction. The first contact with Indians was brief: they killed two men who jumped into the river while hunting game near what is now Fruita on July 10th 1851 according to one account Afterwardalleen [sic] built houses for themselves and four others by digging wells out of natural rock which they found around where they lived." George Churchman was an entrepreneur who decided to rename his village after himself – fruitaan (pronounced "fruit-an"). He set up a farmstead where he grew trees for apples, pears and other vegetables until his death in 1865 aged 54 years old."
