The first military installation in fruita was Fort Logan Army Post which opened in 1907. It was replaced by Fort Lyon Army Post in 1912 after major General Oscar W Hillman donated land for it on the edge of town. From then until 1951, Ft Lyon was home to 3 Infantry battalions (the 1st Battalion being reactivated in 1951), 2 artillery companies (the 1st Battalion being reactivated in 1951), 2 cavalry companies (the 4th Squadron being reactivated in 1951) and an Air Force detachment (no known deployments).

The population increased from 1,265 in 1980 to 5,829 in 2010. As of the 2000 census there were also 2,521 people living on Indian reservations within Clear Creek County as well as 2 ranchers who used their land for grazing purposes only In its early years fruit farming was one of the few ways that villagers could provide food for themselves and their families during difficult times. Fruita is a small town in southern Colorado that was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1849. Fruita became a county seat of Pueblo County in 1861 and the townsite grew to include what are now the cities of Centennial, Gunnison, and Park City. The population of Fruita peaked at 1,500 in 1920 but has declined steadily since then. Today, the population size is just over 100 and most people live in the unincorporated communities around Centennial or Gunnison. The roots of Fruita go back to 1849 when Mormon settlers who were traveling through Southern Colorado arrived at the site of today's Fruita on November 12th. They named their new settlement after one of their own – Brigham Young – leader of the LDS church at that time. The first permanent residents were missionaries from India who came to help build up Utah's fledgling Mormon community. When they arrived they found an open valley with rich gold deposits that had been discovered by earlier wagon trains headed eastward into Kansas Territory. In 1861, Pueblo County was organized from portions of Mesa and Rio Blanco counties and fruita became its county seat. By 1870, fruita had become a thriving town with 7 stores, 2 hotels, 4 churches (1 Baptist), 1 school (gradeschool-12), 3 newspapers (the Sentinel & Rocky Mountain News), 3 sawmills, 5 blacksmiths, 6 cattle drives (5 for beef and 1 for wool), plus agricultural acreage which produced sweet potatoes, cornmeal flourishes beans etc., oats etc., grapes etc., potatoes etc…..Today there are only 2 businesses left closed down 15 years ago including one grocery store still standing as an old slaughterhouse! All this activity + many visitors brought about another boomtown Growth spurt followed soon afterwards driving prices up making it almost impossible for small farmers subsistence level not to increase! In fact some families built entire homes living off agriculture while others managed subsistence levels even keeping salt water ponds/lakes available year round……This condition continued until WWII when all this activity stopped again pushing prices up making it difficult for low income families once again to subsist…………….. While some aspects have changed since pioneer days such as name change & more recent growth rates due mostly to tourism these trends cannot be explained without accounting for significant Changesovertime within local demographics which have shaped continue changes over time
Fruita was founded by George and Emma Janes in 1874. The Janes were farmers who grew corn, wheat, peas, and potatoes on their farmstead. In1876, the Janes sold their farm to J.B. Smith who also established a store on the property. In 1886, Fruita became a city after being platted by J.B. Smith and Wm Husted. The first mayor of Fruita was Wm Husted with James Bissett as the vice mayor. The first post office in Fruita was established in 1888 with Averill Fenton as the Postmaster General. In 1892, John Egan purchased land east of the street from Judge William Ladd and built a sawmill on the site which he named Fruita Mill Company Limited after himself and his wife Emma Ladd Egan (1845-1922). In 1902, Mayor Harry Crippen organized a citizens’ committee to improve water supplies for fruit growers in town by purchasing two hundred fifty feet of pipeline from Pueblo Water Works Company for $10 per foot used at an average cost of $1 per day when new pipe had been constructed about three miles away at Horsehoe Dam near Pueblo Colorado Springs; this project was completed in 1903 Fruita became a city on November 2nd 1906 when it annexed parts of Pueblo
