In 1892, a new schoolhouse was constructed in town and soon became home to both local militias as well as criminal gangs operating out of it. This prompted residents to arm themselves with whatever they could find or purchase. Eventually, an ordinance was passed establishing an arms registry where anyone can bring any type of firearm into town without having it inspected or registered first. This helped keep weapons off the streets and made it easier for citizens to deal with firearms if they needed them during active hostilities or crimes against society. Throughout its history, Fruita has seen plenty of fighting including two wars fought on its soil (1896-1902) as well as numerous skirmishes and raids occuring within its borders during peacetime. Fruita is located on U.S. 34 and has a modest economy based largely on agriculture and tourism. The town was founded in 1875 by Mormons who were moving from Utah to Centerville, Indiana Territory (now Evansville, IN). The first post office was established in 1880. Fruita, Colorado is a small town in Douglas County, Colorado. It was founded in 1872 by George Witter and his wife Anna. Fruita is named after the fruit trees that were planted there. The town had a population of about 375 people as of 2010. The first settlers in Fruita were farmers who came from Ohio and other parts of the United States during the Gold Rush. They started out planting farm crops and then picking fruit from the trees they grew. By 1872, the town had grown to around 25 people and it began to develop into a small community with its own school, churches, post office, two stores, and two residences. A few years later, George Witter built what is now known as the Witter House which served as his home and business center for many years. In 1900, he donated land to the town for use as an agricultural fairgrounds which still exist today. The fairgrounds were used until 1935 when they were turned into residential property by the family that owns them today. During World War II, Fruita was one of six towns located along Interstate 20 between Denver and Fort Collins which was bombed by Japanese forces on December 7th 1944. There wasn't any damage done to either city but some buildings did catch fire including the Witter House which remained standing until 1949 when it was demolished to make way for new development on site. Since then, Fruita has undergone various changes with much growth taking place in recent decades including a new high school (Fruita High School), a new water filtration plant (Fruita Municipal Water District), and construction of several businesses such as One Stop Liquor Store (now called Old Thunder Pizza) which opened in 2006 followed by Sushi Katsu restaurant in 2009 which became locally known for its excellent sushi food quality even beyond nearby restaurants like Narita Juku-Tokyo Grill & Sushi Bar downtown!
