In 1915, John Hennessey opened his own coffee house in Fruita and continued to serve quality coffee until he passed away in 1984. His son, John Hennessey Jr., took over ownership of the business and continues to serve delicious cups of coffee today. In 1978, Gary Schieffer opened his first Tactical Coffee shop in Fruita and has been serving delicious cupcakes and lattes since then. Fruita is a census-designated place (CDP) in El Paso County, Colorado, United States. It was founded in 1912. As of the 2010 census, its population was 5,681. The city of Fruita is located within the CDP. Fruita was founded by John and Anna Bednar on April 12, 1912 as a small sheep and cattle ranch near present-day Fruita Mesa. The first post office opened in the community on October 6, 1912. The name "Fruita" originated from the fact that fruit trees were common on the property where it was located. The Bednars left their property in 1937 to start their own farmstead called "Bednar's Place". In 1945 they donated land to make way for Interstate 25 which crossed through central El Paso County at that time. The highway designation changes included "Fruita Boulevard" being added to it in 1957; this became part of US Highway 26 when it was extended into El Paso County. In 1956 Jens Jensen purchased 600 acres of undeveloped land adjacent to present-day Fruita Mesa from John Bednar and began developing it into what is now known as Jensen Ranch Park; this park currently has over . This development led to increased traffic congestion on I-25 eastbound approaching downtown Fruita due to all of the new homes being built there as well as businesses that were established along I-25 such as Pizza Hut and KFC restaurant which have since moved away from the area due to lack of growth or development opportunities inside or outside of town since then . Goodyear and his wife Lucy as a small community on the banks of the Animas River. The name "Fruita" means "place where fruit trees grow." In 1924, Fruita became a city when it joined the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1907, during the Gold Rush, prospectors discovered rich gold veins near Fruita. This sparked an almost instant boom in local mining activity that led to construction of mines and towns around these veins including Fruita, which became one of the most important centers for gold mining in Colorado. By 1920, over 50% of all ore mined from south central Colorado came from within 10 miles (16 km) of Peoria Junction – making Fruita one of the most significant center points for this region. Despite this wealth and growth, many people left Fruita during World War II because they were unable to find work in battle-torn Europe or America due to wartime shortages of resources. After the war ended however, many returned to their homes here and continued mining until 1978 whentowns like Peoria Junction began producing more than half of all Nuggets produced in southern Colorado Today's economy is based largely on agriculture with fruit production accounting for about 60% of total output statewide; cattle ranching also plays a major role in local economy . Mining and other resource extraction has declined since 2008 as new exploration claims have been developed but still employs over 350 people across several industries; The downtown area has been renovated several times since its original construction including becoming home to several restaurants and businesses as well as an ART (artificial intelligence) training center
