Golden was first settled by prospectors who had accompanied General George Averill during his exploration of western Colorado during the mid-19th century. After reaching Leadville on October 25, 1876 - just two weeks after gold was discovered at Sulfur Springs - these men began exploration for treasure located near present-day Golden. By November 12th they had located what would become known as "The Gilded Age," when golden nuggets were being found at an ever-growing rate throughout western Colorado. As more miners arrived to find their own fortunes within this new window of opportunity, demand for goods and services grew dramatically across local businesses. With burgeoning production came increased prices for goods and services across all levels of society; thus driving many normal citizens out of business or into poverty. This situation created tremendous social upheaval as individuals were forced to compete with those who had already taken advantage of their position within society. In response to this growing wealth inequality among Denverites (particularly merchants), Mayor James Kapp established a committee comprised of five businessmen chaired by Kapp himself to investigate how best to improve life for working class residents living outside Of Denver proper (although much like later versions similar committees exist today). However little progress was made until 1886 when Senator John Hennepin introduced legislation known as "The Kansas Bill." Introduced following Nebraskan congressman William McKinley's victory over incumbent Andrew Johnson on November 4th - which signified a shift towards conservative Republicanism throughout much of America - this bill mandated federal funding be given exclusively to states with positive unemployment rates (i essentially rewarding states that fostered joblessness). This policy change helped create conditions ripe for exploitation by small businesses operating outside Of Denver while simultaneously disadvantaging those residing inside Of Denver looking for work; creating yet another socioeconomic divide within city boundaries which would continue up until today!albeit with slightly different forms from day-to-day life experiences among Average Joe & Jane Citizen! Unfortunately enough for many poor residents living insideOfDenver – especially African Americans & Hispanics – employment opportunities remained nonexistent or extremely limited due largely to discriminatory practices perpetuated by employers across all levels! Consequently leading some members even amongst self-proclaimed progressives & humanitarians such as myself [many others too]to denounce what we perceived as “gilded age” conditions simply because they could not personally benefit from them ! I cannot help but wonder if we have collectively missed out on so much potential growth (& prosperity) because we haveorningsidely viewing our cities thru roseate glasses? Or is it really just that we are used to things being better than they actually are? Time will tell…we will certainly hear about it sooner rather than later!
