Golden is a small town in Montrose County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,486 at the 2000 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Golden Valley and is east of Interstate 25. Golden is home to the University of Colorado at Boulder and other research institutions. The first post office in golden opened in 1879. The name "Golden" was chosen because it was one of several towns in Montrose County that were named after golden coins found by prospectors during the Gold Rush era. The discovery of gold in these areas pushed up prices for goods exported from California, and so many people came to Golden during this time that it became known as "the most beautiful place on Earth." In 1906, Golden voted to secede from Montrose County and become its own entity, becoming one of only a handful of U.S. communities to do so since the end of Reconstruction in America following World War II. During prohibition years (1920-1933), various businesses took advantage of tax laws allowing them to sell liquor without paying excise taxes which amounted to 50% of their sales revenue. These businesses included speakeasies and brothels; some still operate today under different names or with different business practices than when they were first established. One such business still remains open today - The Rusty Nail - which operates as a Chinese takeout restaurant serving Western food items outfitted with an outdoor seating area complete with ping pong table and KFColand playfields
