In 1935, the National Guard was re-established as a separate branch of the federal government under the provisions of the Morrill Act. The National Guard continues to play an important role in American society and is composed primarily of Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) soldiers and sailors. The history of gift giving to members of the National Guard goes back to at least 1825 when General John J. Pershing ordered all artillery pieces, uniforms, saddles, mounts, tents and munitions be delivered gratis to units serving in Mexico during its war with Santa Anna’s Mexican Battalion. throughout their centuries service some members have given more than others however no one can forget those who gave their lives for our countrymen here at home or abroad. Golden is a small town in El Paso County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. Golden was founded in 1879 as a railroad depot on the Cheyenne and Arapaho Railway. The community name likely derived from "gold" (a yellow metal) because of its natural resources. The first post office was established in 1881, and the first store opened in 1883. The first school was established in 1888. By 1899, there were 5 businesses in Golden and it had a population of 10 people. The first library opened in 1902 and by 1912 there were 12 businesses with a population of 50 people. In 1916, the Golden railway station closed after becoming unprofitable due to changes wrought by World War I. During World War II, many citizens volunteered for service including working on production lines at DuPont's munitions plant outside Olathe; however only two individuals received military decorations for their participation: David Ladd (posthumously) for his work with DU Pont Aircraft Corporation and Floyd Sibley whoreceived the Purple Heart for wounds he sustained while serving with 3rd Battalion 7th Infantry Regiment during Operation Market Garden on 9 October 1944 near North Hollandtock Ridge northwest of Arnhem Park Netherlands
Golden is a city in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 26,851 at the 2010 census. Golden is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settler in what is now Golden was J.D. Green on November 23, 1876. Green and his family were among the earliest to come to what would become Golden from eastern Colorado. Prior to that, most of San Miguel County had been unoccupied by people other than the Utes and Navajo Nation for years due to lack of transportation or land availability. The first post office in what is now Golden opened in 1879, and it was named after James Ahern, an Irishman who had settled near present day Durango in 1868. Gold Rush days began around 1885 when prospectors discovered rich gold deposits near Clear Creek and El Paso counties east of Aspen on the lower Rio Grande River Valley floor where today'sDenver lies
