Golden, Colorado is a small town located in the Rocky Mountains of western Colorado. The population was 705 at the 2010 census. Golden is the home of Mount Rushmore National Monument and has been a key spot for pioneers in Central Colorado since early days. The history of Golden begins with the Puebloans who lived there for over two centuries before being forced to leave by Spanish settlers in 1846. The first European to visit Golden was José Antonio Frémont, who explored parts of what is now Colorado during his trip through that state in 1849. It wasn’t until after the Mexican-American War that whites began to arrive in significant numbers in what is now Golden. A group led by James Wickersham set out from Denver on July 2, 1868, travelling westward along what is now I-25. On their journey they passed through Gold Hill and stopped at the General Store on January 10th, 1870 (now part of Old Town). They had come intent upon reaching Fort Laramie but were instead diverted due to an unexpected snowstorm which closed most roads and delayed their arrival by several weeks. In 1890 when gold was discovered near I-25, many prospectors flocked to Golden hoping to find some extra treasure hidden under the surface of this new earth. By 1898 only a very few people remained here while most everyone else crossed into adjacent Weld County for gold country around Silverton and Greeley respectively – indications that mining had become too difficult and risky as well as too expensive given all those new discoveries elsewhere across America. Nevertheless, one man did make it big during this time: named George Hearn started operating a millinery store/brokerage complex on Main Street near today’s High School which catered primarily to miners and other recent arrivals coming into town fromElsewhere looking for work or investment opportunities; he became known locally simply as “Hearn’s Hall”! With so many people moving into town during these years things got pretty crazy – not least because there were no services like water or sanitation available yet! That changed however with construction starting on both Watertown Dam (partly financed by American Express) upstream from town beginning in 1907 which finally solved problems with supply and allowed for regular access to untreated water both inside and outside townlimits! This also brought about great improvements such as easier transportation within town limits thanks especially to US 25 running right through it all! All this progress didn’t happen overnight though – it took quite some time before everything actually functioned smoothly enough for anyone except local kids playing around below ground level just below where Watertown Dam sits today! When World War II started things really accelerated though with businesses closing down left & right as folks went offTo fight alongside their countries (& eventually return home empty handed!), including Hearn himself whose store continued trading even post-war despite having few customers left once hostilities ceased (and numerous injuries sustained)! What followed must have felt like hell on Earth given how much stuff just vanished without any notice whatsoever 😉 But maybe that’s just me 🙂? Anyway backtracking a bit… after 1945 things slowly stabilized somewhat but never really regained their former levels until 2000 when email became popularized & more businesses opened up targeting tourists rather than locals&GOLDEN COAST HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF COLORADO STARTED UP TO HELP DEFEND AND DOCUMENT THE COMMUNITY
