The Coast Guard has been a vital part of the Grand Junction community since its establishment in 1919. The agency provides emergency services, conducts law enforcement and search and rescue operations, educates the public about maritime safety, and helps keep our city safe from coastal erosion. In 1919, when Grand Junction was founded as an unincorporated community on the Missouri River, the Coast Guard was one of the first agencies to respond to cries for help from residents living near issues such as waves crashing against rocks or ships grounding onshore. At that time, it was alsoleshore than today’s Grand Junction Municipal Airport which is located just east of town. In response to requests for Assistance by citizens who were experiencing dangers along the Missouri River or aboard vessels in nearby waters, Acting Commandant J.B. Hickey ordered his unit – The First National Lifeboat Station at North Bend – to be organized and placed under command of then Captain Amedee “Ted” Laddell who served until 1927. During Captain Laddell’s tenure (1927-1929), lifeboats were built at North Bend which became known as The Coast Guard Museum today. Captain John Pappas took overcommand of The First National Lifeboat Station in 1929 and continues to leadGrand Junction Lifesaving Service to this day; he is credited with saving more lives than any other officer during his tenure In 1942 when war begannpossibleravenous resources became scarce due to World War II restrictions; however, Captains George Easonand Franklin Bouchard continued lifesaving operations throughout the war years With new technology available during the 1970s; LIFEBOATS WERE REPLACED BY GREAT OCEAN CRAFT AND Yacht OPERATIONS WHEN THE COAST GUARD BEgan OPERATING DERRICKSON YACHTS !! The Coast Guard's mission is to protect lives, property and environment by preventing environmental disaster, deterring crime and enhancing community safety. Today, the Coast Guard operates over 30 different shoreguard stations throughout the country in order to provide its citizens with reliable protection from hazardous materials, large vessels and other threats that could endanger life or cause damage. Many of these stations are located on coastal towns and villages which have always been a important part of the Coast Guard's mission. In 1916, when it was first created as a separate branch of the Department of Commerce, the Coast Guard had only six officers and 150 personnel. By 1940, there were over 4,000 officers and 3,000 personnel working for the coast guard nationwide. The modern day Coast Guard is made up of many different branches including cutters (lighthouses), patrol boats (motorboats), helicopters (pteros) and boats (firefighting). Each branch has their own unique capabilities which make them essential in our ever-changing world. For example: Lighthouse operations are conducted using radar technology to track ships; patrol boats use speed parameters as well as sonar to detect objects small enough to be stopped by radar; helicopters fly above water searching for criminals or smugglers; firefighting uses jets or buckets to fight fires at sea or on land
