Grand Junction is a city in Old Colorado, located in the San Miguel Valley on the eastern edge of what is now north-central Colorado. The population was 19,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of theDenver–Aurora–Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by fur traders and settlers from Haltom City, Texas in 1876 and named after Grand Junction Creek, which flows through the area. The first settlers were Methodist Episcopalians who arrived in 1876. They started a small mill and store near what is now downtown Grand Junction. In 1878, they built a larger mill and store on an outcrop of land outside of town that became known as "The Hill". Over time, other settlers arrived to fill up The Hill until it had more than 100 residents by 1890. By 1900, there were over 300 people living in Grand Junction. In 1907, Grand Junction amalgamated with nearby Aurora to form Denver County (later renamed Denver). During World War II, Grand Junction served as a training ground for military officers at Fort Carson National Cemetery east of town. After the war ended in 1945, many grand jurors left for greener pastures or moved to cities such as Chicago or Kansas City instead of staying behind to help run Denver County during its Reconstruction period following World War II. As Boulder County began annexing smaller towns within its borders between 1949 and 1959 (the last annexation being by Wheat Ridge), most residents of these annexed towns transferred into Grand Junction when it became their new county seat – except for two residents who remained residentially adjacent to Weld County during this time: Jerry Sveenborg and his wife Peggy Sveenborg; Jerry transferred into Dodge City when Dodge City became county seat in 1959 due to lack of space within Weld County’s borders for another municipal center following its annexation into Grand Junction). characterized itself as a "social melting pot" with multiple cultures represented including Italian Americans; Hispanics; Native Americans; African Americans; American Indians (); Asians (); European immigrants (); etc., which helped attract businesses such as KFC/Pizza Hut/Burger King/Taco Bell/Applebees/, banks like Citizens Bank & Trust (), health clinics like Kaiser Permanente () and Intermountain Medical Center (), among others ().
