Grand Junction, Colorado is a city in and the county seat of Mesa County, Colorado. The population was 535 at the 2010 census. Grand Junction is located on the San Juan River between Monument Valley to the south and Aspen and Arapaho National Forest to the north. It is bordered by Mesa County to the east, Douglas County to the west, Hidalgo County to the northwest, and Montrose County to the southeast. The Mission Trails National Historic Trail runs through town. The first Europeans who arrived in what is now Grand Junction were traders traveling from Santa Fe via Fort Collins. On July 16, 1849, James Waddell discovered gold in an area that became known as Gilt Gulch after being hired by John Sutter for this purpose. Gilt Gulch soon became one of America's most productive gold fields with a total output of $200,000 in 1850 alone. Gilt Gulch was also one of two sites where prospectors struck oil during this time period – both areas were later abandoned because of lack of production or competition from other mining operations. In 1864 Major General George Crook established Camp Supply at Westwater Creek in order to supply artillery troops fighting within United States Army forces stationed nearby at Fort Sumter during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). After California acquired its statehood in 1850 Camp Supply became United States Military District #9 in that district which encompassed all of Utah Territory before it was split into territories on February 14, 1861: Utah Territory (including Grand Junction), Arizona Territory (including Tucson), and New Mexico Territory (including Albuquerque). On February 15th 1861 USRT #5 got underway from Provo Canyon headed for Salt Lake City but due to bad weather conditions returned home onFebruary 17th due there would be no return trip until spring 3rd In 1863 Union Captain George Armstrong Custer led his cavalry unit down Cache Creek near present day Grand Junction while supplies were being transported upriver for them along side wagons pulled by teamsters across wagon roads today called "Custer" Road and "Armstrong" Road

In 1867, Colorado became the 26th state to enter the Union. The region that makes up present-day Grand Junction was part of what is now southern Mexico in 1848 when United States General George Armstrong Custer and his forces invaded Mexican soil during the Mexican-American War. As a result, many people from southeastern Colorado crossed into temporal Mexico Territory in search of territory and opportunity. Some early settlers in this area were David Baca and Francisco Lopez. They surveyed an area that would become present-day Grand Junction on November 15, 1869. In 1870, two brothers named William Teller and John Wesley Smith set out from Pueblo with their families to homestead in what is now eastern Jefferson County. One year later, they donated land for a courthouse and schoolhouse which was built on the current site of Old Main University. The town began to grow rapidly as people came to settle hereabouts. By 1886, there were over 1,500 residents in Grand Junction! The first post office opened at Grand Junction on July 24, 1887; it was called Easton because it was located east of the Trinidad River where today’s Interstate 20 interchange stands. That same year saw another important development when the railroad arrived through this area – it connected eastern Jefferson County with Durango and other nearby cities! It wasn’t long before businesses started opening up around town; prostitution became an integral part of local culture hereabouts! However, by 1912 things had changed significantly asGrand Junction became a firmly established center for mining production! This happened due to various factors such as increased accessibility to resources thanks to improved transportation technology (along with advancements in mining methods) as well as new investment coming into the community from outside sources!
