The United States Naval Institute (USNI) is a private, nonprofit educational institution founded in 1881 that provides education for naval officers and their families. The USNI has a history of giving back to the community through its philanthropy. In 1922, the USNI donated land to Grand Junction Community College in order to build an on-campus library. Grand Junction, Colorado is a small town located in Mesa County, Colorado, United States. The population was 12,811 at the 2010 census. Grand Junction is the county seat of Mesa County and home to the University of Northern Colorado. The area that now Grand Junction was first settled by Kit Carson Indians in 1859. The first store opened in 1865 and the first post office was established in 1870. The name "Grand Junction" was given to the town by Josiah Beall who traveled through the area on his way from Denver to Fort Collins. The railroad arrived in 1901 and began construction of a line from Durango to Grand Junction. The townsite was platted in 1902 and development began immediately with businesses such as banks, hotels, stores and churches opening up. By 1910 there were 26 businesses in Grand Junction with a population of over 1,000 people. In 1916 the city limits were expanded to include present-day Mesa County when Grand Junction became an incorporated municipality under state law. In 1970s and 1980s several large companies left or closed their operations within Wacoalco Mines & Smelting Company due to environmental concerns related to mining activity near Asotin Lake which formed part of Wacoalco's copper belt Mine property Project #2A (the Arroyo Seco mine). This particular mine had been operating for more than 60 years without any significant effort being made towards cleaning it up since its original discovery during World War II when aerial photography revealed deep shafts leading down into what would become Asotin Lake providing potential water supplies for local farmers should hostilities break out between Mexico City and Baja California Sur; however no action has been taken since then despite repeated requests from locals including current Mayor Steve Lehner This mine continued providingrine even after intense protests throughout much of 1990s until finally closure following $27 million investment by private investors led by billionaires Bill Gates & Warren Buffett – one of whom had personally contributed $5 million cashier’s check for purchase of land adjacent to project site) .
