In 1876, the first post office was established in Grand Junction. The town was named for the junction of several trails that led to and from the Rocky Mountains. The Territorial Legislature passed an act in 1879 designating Grand Junction as a county seat.The population of Grand Junction increased rapidly due to the mineral discoveries in the area. Railroads were built through the area, making it easier for people to get around. In 1907, a new courthouse and jail were built in downtown Grand Junction. A major event inGrand Junction's history occurred on October 1, 1912 when President William Howard Taft delivered his speech at Colorado State University.
