Grand Junction, Colorado is a town in Jefferson County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,337 at the 2010 census. Grand Junction became a city in 1973. The first people to live in what is now Grand Junction were the Hidatsa, who settled along the Arkansas River in 1827. A post office called "Hidatsa" was established in 1831, and remained in operation until 1861. The town of Horseshoe Springs was founded by James Winchester on April 20, 1859 as part of a wagon train headed for Utah Territory. It was abandoned due to lack of water and gold prospecting activity around that time. In 1863, gold seekers John Wesley Powell and Edward Abbey discovered candidate coal beds near present-day Grand Junction while exploring the Powder River Basin for millionaire Brigham Young's new Utah Mining Company; this led to increased mining activity around Grand Junction from then on. In 1865, Yellowstone National Park was created when President Abraham Lincoln issued an executive order designating all land within its boundaries as national park land; this included most of present-day Jefferson County. As early as 1870s there were reports of robberies and crime being committed by white miners against Native American miners living on reservations adjacent to their campsites; these incidents were investigations known as "Winchester's War." In 1875–76 four men were killed south of today's Main Street while working for agent Jimmie Butler investigating these crimes; this event is considered one of the most infamous cases of violence among Mine Mill workers during that era. Goldmining operations around present-day Grand Junction slowed down after World War II because production costs became increasingly prohibitively expensive due to advances in metallurgy and technology; however sporadic bursts of growth have occurred throughout the past few decades thanks to increased development outside the town limits caused by increasing tourism opportunities within driving distance of both downtown Grand Junction and nearby Aspen & White Cloud ski resorts (both located within easy walking or biking distance).
