One of the most unique and cherished aspects of Greeley's airforce community is the bond that exists between the members. This relationship started with the early formation of the Air Force in 1947. The Air Force has been a part of Greeley since its inception, and many residents have shared their memories of service or support through donations to the organization. The first donation was made to the Air Force by Mrs. Helen Kapp in 1950. Since then, there has been an ever-growing trend of air force gift giving throughout Greeley. There are countless individuals who have contributed to our community through their generosity, and it is truly amazing how much we've grown as a result. One particular aspect that sets Greeley apart from other communities within Colorado is the high level of support given to the Air Force. One such example is donations made for post-9/11 reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan. In total, over $200,000 has been donated towards this cause, and it shows just how well-connected our community is with our military brass. There are many different reasons why people choose to contribute to either The Air Force or local charities like ours, but one common factor is simply feeling good about what they're doing - Supporting our Troops and Community at Home!

The Greeley Air Force Base Gift History began in the late 1940s when the United StatesAAF sent then Captain Jack Nugent from Colorado Springs to become a commanders assistant at RAF Lakenheath. It wasn't until 1949 that Nugent was transferred to RAF Bentwaters, where he would lead aircrew training and command operations over Europe. In 1951, Nugent became Wing Commander of No. 2 Squadron RAF Bentwaters and served as Commanding Officer of 9 Group which was stationed at RAF Lakenheath. In 1957, Nugent was transferred back to the United StatesAAF as a Major General with responsibility for all USAF Air Training Command units in the Western Pacific Area. Then in 1959, he became Deputy Director of Fighter Aircraft Development Programs at Wright-Patterson AFB before being reassigned to Headquarters USAF in 1961 as Director of Fighter Weapons Development Programs with concurrent control over Tactical Reconnaissance and Missile Systems Directorate. He retired from active duty on July 1, 1970 after 36 years of service with The United States Air Force. During his retirement years Colonel Nugent authored several books on fighter aircraft design including "Aircraft Design - A Historical Perspective" (published by The National Academy Press) and "Aerospace Weapons Development: From Theory to Practice" (published by Oliver & Boyd).
Greeley is a city in Colorado, United States. It is the county seat of Rio Blanco County. The population was 25,526 at the 2010 census. Greeley is the most populous city in the Rocky Mountains and one of the most densely populated cities in North America. The first Europeans to visit Greeley were traders from Spain and Portugal who landed on what is now Fort Collins on July 6, 1680 during Company Town Expedition under Governor John Drysdale. In 1801, General George A. Custer's cavalry brigade used Greeley as their winter encampment while they fought against Mexico near Cortez Mountain. The Battle of Greeley took place on November 8, 1881 when Ulysses S. Grant's army clashed with Mexican general Porfirio Diaz's force near where Creeley Boulevard and I-25 intersect today. The original settlers in what would become Greely were men led by Captain David Hogg and his brother-in-law Major Joseph Lewis who built Hogg's Cabin on present day Main Street in 1794. They named their settlement "Colorado Springs" after Mount Jefferson (present-day Aspen) in Virginia which they had seen from their cabin window while exploring the area for land grants that could be acquired for themselves and their families by then Governor James Kieft of New York Territory (later Denver). It wasn't until 1819 when prospectors James McGee and Doniphan discovered oil shale deposits in what would become townsite east of town on Spring Creek Road that people began migrating to Greeley from all over Colorado Springs region because it was an excellent location for a dry goods store, post office, schoolhouse/mangery and hotel as well as being able to access coal resources nearby at Green River Basin mines such as Smiths Station Mines #4 & #5 which are still visible today just south of Interstate 25 along Coal Valley Road off US 50 yards east of Park Meadows Elementary School across from IH 35W exit 11A (now called University Avenue).
