The Greeley Army Depot was founded in 1885 as the Greeley Arsenal. It served as the main armory for the Colorado National Guard and eventually became an army depot. The first soldiers to arrive in Greeley were recruited from around the state of Colorado. From here, they were sent to fight in various conflicts throughout World War I, World War II, and then the Korean War. Today, the Army Depot is home to a variety of military equipment and supplies that are used by both the United States Military and its numerous allies around the world. Greeley, Colorado is a town located in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 9,813 at the 2010 census. Greeley is the largest city in Weld County and it anchors the northern edge of the Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Area. Greeley is also home to Rocky Mountain National Park and several ski resorts including Aspen Ski & Snowboard Resort and Keystone Resort. Greeley was founded on October 6, 1871 by John Wesley Powell and his group as a small settlement on the banks of the North Platte River. GreeLEY became an independent city on January 1, 1923 after taking over from its predecessor Fort Carson City. On July 14, 2002, Greeley was named one of "America's 10 Best Towns for Families" by The Daily Herald newspaper. The first person to settle in what is now Greeley was John Wesley Powell who passed through this area in 1871 while exploring western Wyoming Territory on his way to reach the Source of the Nile. In 1865 Major George Armstrong Custer led an Indian Expedition that plundered much of what is now Greeley along with other towns in Weld County such as Golden (now Trinidad) and Pueblo (now Centennial). Lt Col George Armstrong Custer's body rest in stately repose at Fort Laramie National Historic Site east of downtown GreeLEY today. In 1881 Gold Rush fever swept across North America leaving many people dead or dying from it; however, not so with John Wesley Powell who returned to find that everything had remained unchanged since he last visited this area over 25 years earlier! In 1901 construction began on Laramie Depot which served as both local transportation hub for locals traveling into town for work and general stores during boom times as well as housing for new residents influxing into Laramie during that time frame When World War I started sixteen year old Enoch Beattie organized a local militia unit known as “The Gilt Eagles” who fought alongside Umpqua Company throughout Battlefield Ridge near present day Aspen High School until their surrender on September 16th 1918 when General Douglas MacArthur arrived with orders to move them southward towards EugeneMilligan…the final chapter of The Coloradan Wars begins! As people migrated out of farming country into more urban areas around Denver-Aurora they were followed by businesses such as breweries, hotels/motels etc., which attracted workers from all over Colorado Springs especially due to strikes occurring there between Southern Pacific Railroad workers and Western Union Telegraph employees – something that would become common locations throughout most industrial cities during this time period….Today we enjoy great views of mountains all around us without ever having to leave our living rooms…..
