The Greeley, Colorado Army National Guard began its history in 1881 when a detachment of artillerymen from the 1st Colorado Infantry Regiment was ordered to garrison Fort Collins. The first soldier from Greeley was Private First Class John Herrick who served with the regiment until 1865. In 1887, the 2nd Colorado Infantry Regiment was assigned to Greeley and two years later, the 3rd Colorado Infantry Regiment arrived. The soldiers of these regiments helped form the nucleus of what would become the 1st and 3rd Colorado Armies National Guards. In 1899, Greeley voters approved an ordinance authorizing Republic Services Company to provide gift certificates for military enlistment purposes. This company became known as Republic Service Bureau and provides gifts including hats, insignia, uniforms and other related items to members of the army or navy in behalf of their families. Today, Republic Service Bureau is a division of The Salvation Army and helps support troops stationed abroad through donations such as candy bars, cigarettes and coffee filters. The city was founded on April 12, 1879 by Horace Greely, an American Railroads executive. It became one of the first U.S. cities to be served by the Denver–Aurora Expressway in 1924. During World War II it was one of the most bombed cities in the United States with over eighty bombing raids; however, no fatalities were attributed to Greeley civilians. In 1984 Greeley was renamed "The Town That Could" after becoming the first municipality in Colorado to receive this distinction from then-Governor Howard Dean during his campaign for Governor of Colorado

Greeley is a town in Clark County, Colorado, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. Greeley is part of the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of Greeley was first platted in 1872 by John Wesley Powell and Augustus Saint Olaf as a small lakeside village on the north bank of the South Platte River. It became an important railroad center due to its location near the Larimer and Arapaho Railroad lines. In 1904, Greeley merged with neighboring Thornton and became what is now known as "the tri-cities". The merger resulted in growth for both towns which added more than 100 businesses to their populations over the next few decades. In 1996, Greeley voters passed a referendum approving annexation by Aurora County. This led to rapid growth for both cities and has helped make Greeley one of Aurora's most populous municipalities. Growth has also caused problems; for example, when Aurora annexed another smaller town called Northglenn in 2009 it resulted in an increase in housing prices in that city by $30 million since then alone!
Greeley, Colorado was founded on February 14, 1859 by John C. Fremont and James H. Long as the site of a new Mormon town called Cache Valley. The first post office in Greeley was established on April 1, 1859. In 1860, Greeley became the capital of Colorado Territory after it was created from parts of Arizona and New Mexico Territory. On January 17, 1861, Greeley's first mayor, Isaac J. Stevens, resigned following a letter he had written to the Territorial Governor urging him to recognize Utah as a state rather than continue to try to negotiate its admission as a separate territory.
