Greeley was founded in 1875 by John Wesley Powell and named for him. The first post office was established in Greeley in 1876, and the first businesses were a store and restaurant. The first school was established in 1877 and the first doctor was Dr. George Higginson. In 1895, Greeley became an incorporated city with a population of 1101 people. At that time it had two banks, one grocery store, three churches and fifteen residences. By 1930 the population had grown to 2700 people with five banks, thirty-four stores and eighty-seven residences. In 1955 Greeley merged with Aurora to form one municipality with a combined population of over fifty thousand people. In 2000 Greeley annexed Centennial Park which has an area of . The Coast Guard Gift History Museum is a private, non-profit museum located in New York City. The museum is devoted to the history and culture of the Coast Guard. It was founded in 1984 by Rear Admiral William H. McRaven with the purpose of preserving and displaying artifacts connected to the Coast Guard and its members. The first gift from the Coast Guard was a set of binoculars. These were given to cadets at Annapolis Naval Academy as part of their inauguration ceremonies in 1849. From that time until 1947, gifts were made monthly, with April being the month of gift giving for the Coast Guard as a whole. In 1947, Congress passed an act authorizing appropriations for The United States Coast Guard Memorial Fund which would be used to acquire items related to service and sacrifice on behalf of all Americans on land or at sea. This act also provided for donation of any item or artifact that could be deemed significant within five years from its acquisition date by either the National Archives or The Library of Congress (Librarian). In 1984, Rear Admiral William H. McRaven created The CoastGuard Gift History Museum in memory of his late father who had been a member of the United States Marine Corps Class Of 1941 which donated his knife collection to NAS Annapolis during World War II along with many other valuable items including three Stars On His Hat insignia and original issue Colt revolvers which he personally traded with Japanese pirates while serving aboard USS Constitution (CV-6) during patrol operations off Okinawa Bay in 1945!

Greeley on July 24, 1876 as a small town on the confluence of South Park Avenue and East Capitol Street. The first post office opened in Greeley on October 2, 1876. The population of Greeley grew rapidly from its initial estimated population of 100 residents to over 1,500 by 1907. Construction of the University of Colorado began in 1912 and quickly filled the need for students and workers in what was then rural Weld County. In 1915, when Fort Lyon was completed just north of town, Greeley became an important military base and community for soldiers and their families until it was closed down in 1968. Today, much like other small towns throughout America, Greeley continues to grow despite struggles with economy and crime rates that have significantly increased since the early 2000s. With more than 1,000 businesses located within walking distance of downtown or close to major transportation hubs such as Interstate 25 or I-70 (including several thousand jobs at CU), Greeley remains an important cultural center for both locals and visitors alike.
