Greeley, Colorado is a town in San Juan County, Colorado, United States. The population was 6,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood metropolitan area. Greeley was founded on April 20, 1875 by J. D. Spalding and Wm. Folsom as a small farming community located on the edge of what is now downtown Greeley. The name Greeley comes from Spanish "granada" meaning "a big rock" and it was given to the community because of its location on high ground overlooking the Granada Valley near today's downtown Greeley and Pikes Peak Avenue. The first post office in Greeley was established in 1876 and served until 1886 when it moved to Aurora. The currentpost office building was built in 1902 and is considered one of Denver's most beautiful buildings. One of the first things that residents did when they arrived in their new community were to build a schoolhouse which still stands today (now used as apartments).
