Greeley, Colorado is a city in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado. Greeley is the county seat for Douglas County and was founded in 1867 on the site of present-day Greeley. The population was 108,753 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Greeley were fur traders and travelers led by Kit Carson in 1814. A post office called "Greeley" was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1896. The town site itself was selected as the cornerstone of what would become Greeley on November 5, 1867. At that time, it had a population of only three people. In 1880, when Denver became an incorporated city, Greeley annexed part of its westward-growing neighbor to form a new municipality with a population of over 50,000 people. In 2006–2007, City Councilman Rick O'Donnell proposed rezoning parts of downtown for special development including high-end housing and retail space for families living below poverty lines which would be financed with bonds from the city's coffers rather than from general fund revenues like other buildings such as libraries or courts that are used without charge by residents who choose not to use them. Greeley is a town in Park County, Colorado, United States. The population was 9,564 at the 2010 census. Greeley is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Greeley was George Backus on October 10, 1824. He named it after Brigadier General John C. Fremont's home town of Albany in New York state. A post office called Greeley was established in 1828, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1876, Greeley established an electric streetlight system with sixteen lights. In 1907, the city incorporated as a municipality and annexed portions of the towns of Brighton (north), Aurora (south), Thornton (east), Stanley (west), and Southglen (south). As a municipally incorporated community with its own government, Greeley enjoyed certain rights and privileges not available to unincorporated communities within Park County such as voting rights and land use regulation authority. These advantages ended when Park County merged into Denver City on January 1, 1996; however some municipal services continue to be provided by village form local governments through special charters or ordinances adopted by the new City Council members without vote from residents or referenda from residents who are no longer living within those villages themselves but still retain their relationship to those municipalities through representation on councils which develop policies for all villages combined as well as individual Village referenda where citizens have the opportunity to voice their concerns directly to village members about proposed development projects within their community that may impact their way of life or interests

The town reached its peak popularity around World War II when it became home to military installations including Fort Carson and Air Force Base Rocky Mountain West. However, following the end of World War II, Greeley experienced rapid economic decline due to declining industry and factors such as immigration from Europe that caused competition for jobs within the city limits. In 1990, Greeley merged with neighboring Westminster to form a single municipality with an estimated population of 508 people
